About

Mestre Roxinho and the School

Our group is lead by Mestre Roxinho from Bahia, Brazil.   Mestre Roxinho has been playing Capoeira Angola for 30 years and is an advanced teacher and player of the game.

He teaches both beginners and intermediate classes at his school ECAMAR in Surry Hills every evening and on Saturday mornings.  The school has a vibrant and diverse group of students committed to learning the beautiful art of Capoeira Angola and he looks forward to meeting more of you!  With the help of his students Mestre Roxinho wants to establish Capoeira Angola here so that everyone can keep playing it long into the future.

Project Bantu

During the weekdays Mestre Roxinho is busy with Project Bantu, teaching Capoeira Angola to at-risk youth mainly from refugee and Aboriginal communities.  You can see more info, photos and stories from the kids about how Capoeria Angola is enriching their lives at the Project Bantu website.

Achievements

Since his arrival in Sydney, Mestre Roxinho and the ECAMAR students have recorded two CDs together and hosted three International Capoeira Angola Encounters with some of Brazil’s most brilliant Mestres (Mestre Virgilio, Mestre Augusto, Mestre Moraes, Mestre Plinio) coming to teach and share their knowledge.  At the Encounters you will be exposed to the full richness of this living and breathing art, understand the importance of its origins and cultural context in Brazil and start to imagine for yourself the future of Capoeira Angola as it develops here.
